About Traumatic Brain Injuries

THE NUMBERS TELL THE STORY:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a silent yet serious epidemic currently leaving 5.3 million Americans  with disabilities. This represents over 2% of the US population.
  • Every 17 seconds, one person in the U.S. sustains a brain injury. 
  • 80% are treated and released from an emergency department.
  • 75%  of  TBI’s that occur each year are concussions or other forms of mild TBI.
  • Mortality from brain injuries has exceeded the cumulative number of American battle deaths inclusive of all wars since the founding of the Republic.
  • Every 7 minutes, someone dies of a brain injury.
  • 80% of brain injury victims end up in divorce and have a hard time in relationships.
  • 75% of persons with TBI’s who return to work will lose their job if they do not have support.
  • The estimated lifetime cost for each survivor of a severe brain injury exceeds $4 million.
  • 35% of TBI’s are related to falls.
  • The number of people with TBI’s who are not seen in an emergency department or who do not receive care is unknown.
